Lightning Shutdown-Long Version

This version is ideal for someone who is not as familiar with the lightning shutdown procedure. This has ALL the steps and locations of computers. For someone who is very familiar with lightning shutdown at the 90“ and who observes frequently, you might like the short version which is linked on the previous page.

Changes Coming Out of Downtime 2018
  1. We have an “always on” UPS now, which feeds a power strip above BokAux. The Aux computer, the WIFI, BokPOP, and the phones are all plugged into this power strip which means these are now always left on. You can use BokAux now to keep an eye on the weather by pulling up the weather sites bookmarked on the computer in Firefox.
  2. BokCCD2 is now the main Azcam computer for both the B&C and 90Prime instruments. We are going to have a spare Azcam Login machine (BokCCD4) in the future, but it is now currently at ITL. The username and password to get in are the same as before.
  3. There is no longer an UPS under the counter feeding console power. There is a new UPS in the black computer rack labeled “Console UPS” To shut this down you press the on/off button and select “Off Immediately” with the OK button. This takes a while to shut off. When you turn it on you must select “On Immediately” with the OK button and arrows, otherwise the console will not turn on.
  4. The weather computer is now password protected, and the password is posted on the monitor. You turn on the weather computer by pressing the top edge of the left hand corner (it's beveled at a 45 degree angle), of the PC mounted on the wall next to the monitor.

Control Room: Telescope Control Workstation

  1. Move the telescope to the stow position

  2. Close the primary mirror covers.

  3. Close the dome shutter. Hold button until you are sure shutter is closed. On the weather computer, in the box labeled Telemetry, you will see Dome State in bold. Underneath this, it should read closed. Please double check by looking (with a flashlight if the dome is dark), that the dome really is closed as well.

  4. Stow the upper and lower wind screens.

  5. Stow the dome.

  6. Turn Dome switch to Manual.

  7. Turn IIS switch to OFF.
  8. Disable the telescope drive servos in TCS by hitting <F10> on keyboard.
  9. Turn OFF the “Telescope Power”, “RA Oilpad”, “Main Comp” or “Aux Comp”, “Dec Preload”, and “RA Preload”. All of these buttons should now be green.

  10. Switch OFF the telescope control console.
  11. Turn OFF the “upper dome power” and the “dome motor power” switches. To the right of the AED, unplug one AC cable marked with red tape. This is the dome microphone, and may not have been plugged in.
  12. At the TCS computer, select “Manual” from the “ShutDown” menu and follow the directions on the computer screen to close out of the TCS program. Hit enter until it exits.
  13. Shutdown the TCS computer at Start Menu.
  14. Close any open programs or windows & shut down the Autoguider Computer.
  15. Push IN the “Emergency Stop” button on the console.

    5. Upper IIS readout
    6. IIS Motor Controller.
    7. NEW bokccd5 CCD computer (hold in power button until it turns OFF, then unplug)
      1. «< photo coming »>
  2. Just unplug the following
    1. Lower IIS readout (no on/off switch): AC cord identified by red tape.
    2. BCSpec” Melles Griot Shutter Power Supply (on the B&C instrument itself, not the CCD; there is no on/off switch, just unplug power cord from orange outlet; DO NOT unplug ANYTHING from the CCD camera)
    3. Optoserver (rectangular silver aluminum box, no on/off switch, just unplug).

  3. Make sure cap is on video finderscope (only if time / storm distance allows)

Control Room: Observers Workstation

  1. If using 90Prime make sure to unload any filter that is currently loaded in the beam. Press “unload” to do so.

      2. Click on the HP icon and select “PowerOff”
    5. Turn off weather computer cleanly using computer's start menu.

Control Room: Near BokAux & KVM computer

  1. If using 90Prime: Turn off the two rotary switches labeled “90 PRIME CCD” and “90 PRIME SYSTEM”

  2. Turn off all the computers on the KVM computer except BOKPOP by pressing “scroll lock” twice and the number corresponding to the computer you want to turn off. You can also press the number on the Grey 8 port “TRENDNET USB/PS/2 KVM Switch” on top of the black computer rack and shut them down on the KVM computer. Either of these methods can work, it's just a matter of preference. Shut all of them down cleanly using their individual start menus.

NOTE: The 90” network now has a section that remains on during a lightning shutdown. This Always-ON-Network includes an UPS behind the wooden wall and several devices including BOKPOP and the AUX-PC. Please leave these devices powered on when doing a lightning shutdown.

  1. The number associated with “Bokccd2 Azcam Login” computer is “2”
  2. The number associated with “Bokccd4 Spare Azcam Login” is “4”
  3. The number associated with “Pricilla” is “5”-this most likely will not be on.
  4. The number associated with “Bart” is “6”
  5. The number associated with “bokpop” is “7” (Please leave BOKPOP turned ON)
