Warm Startup / Jan 27, 2018 / P Gabor ✔✘
Assuming there is time to turn the thermal system on for a couple of hours before opening VATT
BasementCheck dry air supply system dew point (typ. ~ -47)
BasementTurn on building & pier fans
DomeOpen dome register vents (there are four of them)
DomeOpen dome shutter (slit) manually: plug dome into the power socket (note on safety: this ensures dome short is out: tether attached to cord); operate the dome shutter by turning the control button on the electric box on the silo wall to the SE
DomeOpen West door (leading to ladder to the roof) and wedge it in the fully open position
Control roomTurn on the main dome fan (green button on a strip to the right of the SW balcony door)
Dome ventilation running
Even at wam startup it is prudent to reboot VATTEL and M2 PI Controller
Control roomKill the TCSglue; make sure M2 Controller is disconnected; kill all GUIs (if any)
TCS roomTurn M2 PI Controller off
TCS roomReboot VATTtel: press tiny “Reset” button, wait for the green “Run” and “Pass” LEDs, and for “Guider OK” on the monitor
TCS roomM2 PI Controller will need to be turned on later
Control roomMOUNT CONTROL tab: Turn cell fans “ON”
Silo 2nd lvlNESLAB: Check coolant level
Silo 2nd lvlNESLAB: Simultaneously: toggle fron panel ON/OFF switch to “ON” & slowly raise manual valve lever (to minimize vibration)
Silo 2nd lvlNESLAB: Also simultaneously: watch pneumatic-actuated valves “OPEN”
Silo 2nd lvlNESLAB: Check pressure gauge (usually well above the nominal 60 psi)
Control roomMOUNT CONTROL tab: Wait for “NESLAB is On” to appear

Control roomStart APPS ⇒ VATT ⇒ TCS_GLUE
Control roomTHERMAL tab: note temperature differential (strut & mirror)
Control roomTHERMAL tab: radio button “ON” (do not use setpoint; setpoint to be used EXCLUSIVELY to change mirror temperature fast in time-critical situations; CLOSE SUPERVISION REQUIRED)
Themal system running
In immediate preparation of opening
DomeStart filling science camera dewar with LN2
DomeFill out LN2/camera log – listen for full dewar, cease flow when dewar is full
DomeCheck dome shutter is plugged into the wall power socket
DomeTurn on power supply of finder telescope camera (on top of box on South side of East fork)
DomeOpen finder telescope objective cover (CAUTION: check for snow on dome shutter if needed)
DomeCheck derotator rotation is at “home”/startup/init position and cable wrap is not twisted
DomeSBIG guider camera power supply (mounted on upper SW side of homed guider): Turn power “ON”
DomeDisconnect LN2 filler hose from camera dewar, move storage dewar off of telescope platform and south, to dome silo wall)
DomeRemove camera ground wire and clip it on silo, near storage dewar
DomeDisengage stow pins, note telescope is south heavy if mirror cover is closed (which it should be), and must be raised slightly in elevation towards zenith with hand pressure, until marks align. Failure to do this usually binds stow pins, resulting in failure of pins to fully release.
DomeCheck azimuth axis “home” (pointers best visible from lower level by the entrance to dome)
DomeCheck AZ hard stop flippers are showing green sides north.
DomeClose and lock West door (leading to ladder to the roof) for safety reasons (a person on the roof could get swept down by the rotating dome's shutters)
Dome actions done
BasementSTEP ONE (labeled as such): Pull out red switch, upper left corner of control box
BasementAfter recirculation pump starts, check flow meter by oil tank
BasementCheck that one chiller is “ON” (green indicator) (alternates between chillers #1 & #2, each on/off cycle)
BasementCheck oil temp set point (61 F)
BasementCheck oil temp actual (should rise immediately after recirculation pump starts, then settle at or very slightly above set point)
BasementCheck oil level light “OK” (if it's going to go out because of low oil level, it will do so after recirculation pump and/or pressure pumps have been started. May come back on after more running, as oil returns from azimuth bearing)
BasementSTEP TWO (labeled as such): Rotate pumps switch clockwise to “ON”
BasementCheck low side (feed pump) pressure rising
BasementWAIT FOR HIGH PRESSURE PUMP TO START
BasementCheck high pressure side: pressure and flow “OK” after running awhile
BasementHydrostatic bearing oil system on
BasementUSE HEARING PROTECTION PROVIDED IF STAYING TO OBSERVE OPERATION OF PUMPS (muffs are by light switch)
Basement actions done
