Using the MAESTRO Guider

NOTE: This is only a temporary work around for the April 08 run. This only works on hoseclamp

Starting the Guider

  1. Login to hoseclamp as mmtop
  2. cd /mmt/soguiders/maestro/
  3. ./soguider.maestro
  4. Click "Start using default parameters"

Using the Guider

Defining the guider coordinate system

Note: This will need to be done every time the guider is switched on for the first time - the rotator must be switched on during the set up.

Focusing the star at the slit plane

  1. Position the star close to the slit(s) (see step 4 of section "Positioning a star on the slit")
  2. TO can then move the telescope in steps either side of the default Hecto position to find the best visual focus.
  • This step should not be needed once a default focus position for MAESTRO has been found and verified.

Positioning a star in the slit and starting guiding.

  1. Turn on the f/5 Th Ar lamp to illuminate the slit(s). Acquire a single image.
  2. Display -> Erase all marks -> Place marks. Place markers on the slit(s) by clicking on the slit(s) positions. Click done in the Display box.
  3. Turn off the f/5 Th Ar lamp so you can see the star
  4. Telescope -> Offset telescope. Place a marker on the star by clicking on the star's current position, then click on the slit you wish to place the star in. Telescope will be then be offset to move the star into the slit.
  5. Click on the slit to position the white box.
  6. Guide -> Fullframe. Do not use windowed guiding at this time as it does not work.
  7. The white box position may move when the guiding is switched on. If it does, use the U, D, R, L buttons to re-position the box to centre it on the silt you are guiding on.

Shutting Down the Guider

  1. Close the guider GUI -
  2. Confirm the autoguider shut down.
  3. In a terminal: _ps aux | grep AzCam? _
  4. If there are any AzCamImageWriter? processes running: kill -9 xxxxx (where xxxxx is the process ID number)
